59 ケルドゥ付近 ［スウェイルデイル］ (Near Keld, Swaledale)
スウェイルデイルの最上流の村の一つに、ケルドゥがある。ここもハイカーなどに人気のあるところである。谷間はいよいよ狭くなってくるが、まるで天国に近づいているように、さらに穏やかで美しくなる。
「ケルドゥ」とは、ノース人が使った古代スカンディナヴィア語で「水の湧き出るところ」を意味する「ケルダ」という言葉からきているという。たしかにこの村の近くには、ウェイン・ウォス・フォースやキャットレイク・フォース、キズドン・フォースといったいくつもの滝がある。
これらの滝は、いずれも落差が数メートルくらいである。日本人にとってはそれほどめずらしいものではないが、平坦なところが多く滝の少ないイギリスでは、深山幽谷を思わせるものがある。スウェイル川は、これらの滝やまわりのフェル――これもノース語で荒野を意味する――から流れでた小さな沢がいくつも集まって生まれる。
ケルドゥのあたりまで来ると、谷間もぐっと狭くなり、いよいよヨークシャー・デイルズの最奥地まで来たとの感がある。まわりは、なんと――それともたった――標高が600mを越える「山」ばかりである。
ここから北へ6kmほど行けば、もうダラム州である。その州境ちかくに、標高が約528mで、イングランドでもっとも高いところにある旅館として知られているタン・ヒル・インがある。
Keld is one of the most remote villages in the upper Swaledale and is a
very popular place among hikers. The dale becomes narrower and more peaceful
as if it were coming near heaven. Dry stone walls, burns and trees are
laid out perfectly on the slopes of the hills. Keld ranks high in my favorite
spots in the dales.
The name of Keld comes from a Norse word "kelda" meaning a spring
or stream. And there are waterfalls such as Wain Wath Force, Catrake Force
and Kisdon Force. As they are not more than dozens of feet high and not
so large waterfalls for a Japanese tourist, but they were able to make
me satisfied with the feeling that I had stepped into the deepest place
of Swaledale surrounded by the mountains of more than 2000 feet above sea
level, not 2000 meters!
About 4 miles north from here, there is a boundary between Yorkshire and
a neighbouring county, Durham. Near it, there is Tan Hill Inn, 1732 feet
above sea level, the highest located hotel in England.
