(Faraway My Yorkshire)

(The Yorkshire Dales)

(Ribblehead Viaduct, Ribblesdale)

Batty Moss of Ribble Head, surrounded by the Three Peaks of Yorkshire dales, Whernside, Ingleborough and Pen-y-Ghent, is the most remote and isolated place from human activities.
The Settle-Carlisle railway line of 72 miles runs across this one of the bleakest but the most splendid lands. And the magnificent Ribblehead Viaduct was built over the moss in 1870 after 5 years' hard work in sever weather conditions. Being 104 feet in height and 440 yards in length, it has 24 beautiful arches.
The hill behind the viaduct in this picture is Whernside, 2416 feet above sea level, which is the highest mountain in Yorkshire.
Inglegorough, 2376 feet, is the second highest one and it is said to have a silhouette of lion lying down. Unfortunately I missed a chance to see it.
The Three Peaks do not appear to be peaks for me. Because they all have shapes like soup plates placed upside down. Therefore I hesitate to call them peaks. In my idea, "a peak" must be steeper and more pointed. Mountains like the Old Man of Coniston of the Lake District deserve to be called a peak, I think.
I admire myself now for having visited here, the bleakest and the most isolated land even in Yorkshire.
